LIFE

Mansa Muhammad was the 8th ruler or king of the Mali Empire. He was the son of the Malian emperor Mansa Qu and was the predecessor of the 9th Mansa, Mansa Musa (famously known as the richest man to ever live). His exact reign is unknown to scholars, but it is believed to have been very short. Muhammad’s successor Musa took the Malian imperial throne some time between (1307-1312).

DEATH OR DISAPPEARANCE

Musa claimed that he ascended the throne after the previous Mansa disappeared or died on an expedition while exploring the Atlantic Ocean. Some people believe he may have even reached the Americas’ before Christopher Columbus. Gaoussou Diawara, The Malian historian claimed that modern-day politicians in Mali should  look upon, Mansa Muhammad as an example of a ruler who valued science and discovery over holding onto power.
