Kofi Annan was born on April 8, 1938, in (Fante New Town, an ethnic Fante Community) in the predominantly Asante city of Kumasi, in Ghana. He was born into one of the Ghanaâs Fante aristocratic families. Both of his grandfathers were Fante paramount chiefs. His father, Henry Reginald Annan, was a Fante nobleman.
He spent his early years in Ghana, attending the elite Mfantsipim school, where he learned that âsuffering anywhere concerns people everywhere.â
International đPolitics
Annan started his political career in 1962 when he joined the UN system as an administrative and budget officer for the World Health Organization in Geneva. He served in various administrative roles within the UN, including Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations. In 1997, he became the Secretary-General of the United Nations. His tenure was marked by efforts to reform the UN bureaucracy, restore public confidence in the organization, and address global challenges such as the AIDS epidemic and human rights abuses.His key achievements include strengthening UN peacekeeping operations, creating the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and adopting the UNâs first counter-terrorism strategy. He was deeply involved in the process by which Timor-Leste gained independence from Indonesia and also certified Israelâs withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000.
Activism & Legacy âđż
Annan became a strong advocate for human rights, development, and the rule of law.
He initiated the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a global plan to reduce poverty and improve health and education.
Annan also championed the âresponsibility to protectâ (R2P) doctrine, which asserts the international communityâs obligation to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity.
His work earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001, which he shared with the United Nations.
After his time as Secretary-General, Annan continued his activism through the Kofi Annan Foundation, an independent organization working to promote better global governance and strengthen the capacities of people and countries to achieve a fairer, more peaceful world. He also worked to resolve the Kenyan election crisis in 2008 and served as the Joint Special Envoy for Syria in 2012.
Annan died on the morning of August 18, 2018, in Bern, Switzerland. He was 80.
