By: Leon Kwasi Kuntuo-Asare

Origins

Kashta was an 8th century BC  king of the Kushite Dynasty, a powerful ancient East African  kingdom located in present-day Sudan and southern Egypt.   He succeeded King Alara, the founder of the Napatan royal dynasty, which would go on to create the 25th Dynasty of Egypt. His reign marked a pivotal moment in Kushite history, setting the stage for the complete conquest of Egypt by his successor, Piye.

Kashta’s reign is known for its ambitious expansionist policies, which included him extending Kushite’s influence into Upper Egypt. He adopted the title of “King of Upper and Lower Egypt,” a clear indication of his aspirations to rule the entire Nile Valley as a single Niloltic empire,  which his  predecessor Piye would accomplish.

HIS LEGACY

Kashta is remembered for being a powerful and influential king who played a crucial role in the unification of Nubia and the subsequent conquest of Egypt by the Kushite Empire. His reign marked a significant turning point in Nilotic history, as the  Kushite Dynasty became the predominant force in the region.

  1. I never heard of this historical figure before, but thanks for informing me. It’s good to see people talking about these ancient kingdoms and showing the rulers were indeed Black.

      1. No problem. Thanks for sharing the information. I even talked about some of that misconception of Kemet and other kingdoms in one of my other blogs about problematic tropes involving Africa.
