The 57-year-old Hendricks was shot near Gqeberha, in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa a few weeks ago..
Hendricks was a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights within the Muslim community. In South Africa he founded organizations and spaces to support queer Muslims and other queer people who faced marginalization despite South Africa’s constitution being the first in the world to make it illegal to discriminate against LGBTQ people
Hendricks was also known for his work in promoting inclusive and affirming interpretations of Islam. He founded the Al-Ghurbaah Foundation, which provides psycho-spiritual support services to Muslims who are marginalized based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and belief.
