In recent days immigration protests in Los Angeles, sparked by the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal migrants, have been complicated by a disturbing video circulating on social media. The footage shows two Latino protesters directing racist taunts and threats at a Black police officer, an incident that some activists claim threatens to undermine unity between the Black and Latino communities. While others, like online pundit Tariq Nasheed and others, claim that there has never been any Black and Brown unity, due to ingrained anti-black racism within the Latin community. This is especially true in Los Angeles, where the Latin gangs like the Mexican Mafia will often partner with the Aryan Brotherhood to target Black people on the streets or in prison.

The protests themselves erupted over the weekend after federal immigration officers conducted raids in predominantly Latino areas of Los Angeles, leading to dozens of arrests. Tensions were further inflamed by the president’s deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Southern California on Monday, adding to the 2,000 National Guard personnel already present.
This incident involving the video highlights the challenges of maintaining solidarity amidst heightened political and social unrest. As communities continue to voice their opposition to immigration policies, the focus remains on ensuring that efforts for justice and change are not derailed by internal divisions.
