ORIGINS
Little written information is available on Nanny, so much of what is known about Nanny of the Maroons comes by way of oral history. It is believed that she was an Asante woman and was born in the Asante Empire (modern-day Ghana West Africa), sometime around 1686. Some people believe she may have been part of the Oyoko clan (the ruling clan of the Asante kingdom). She would later be captured and eventually enslaved by the British and sent to their Colony of Jamaica.
MAROON REVOLUTIONARY LEADER
The written historical information that is available on Nanny, documents events at beginning of the 18th century. During that time, under her leadership, Nanny and a band of fighting Maroons of West African descent, called the “Windward Maroons” waged a successful and prolonged guerrilla war against the British colonial government who controlled the island of Jamaica. The conflict between the African freedom fighters and the British enslavers lasted for many years and became known as the First Maroon War. Due to Nanny’s resistance tactics and military leadership skills, which she likely learned growing up in the Asante Empire, she was able to give the Maroons a certain amount of freedom within the borders of Maroon colonies in the jungle of Jamaica.
LEGACY
Her military command skills during the First Maroon War won the Maroons some degree of autonomy on the colonial slave island.
She was given the honorific titles of Queen Nanny and Granny Nanny.
In 1975, Nanny was given the Order of the National Hero (posthumously).
She remains a powerful symbol of leadership and defiance in Jamaican and African Diaspora history.
